About RMAN Compatibility

The RMAN environment can contain the following components:

RMAN executable
Recovery catalog database
Recovery catalog schema in the recovery catalog database
Target database
Auxiliary database (used for duplicate, duplicate for standby or tablespace point-in-time recovery)

Each component has a release number. Oracle uses up to 5 digits, but only up to 4 are significant for RMAN compatibility purposes.

Examples: 10.1.0.4, 9.2.0.6, 8.1.7.4

RMAN Compatibility Matrix

In general, the rules of RMAN compatibility are as follows:

The RMAN executable version should be the same as the target database. Legal exception combinations are listed in Table B-1.
The RMAN catalog schema version must be greater than or equal to the RMAN executable.
The RMAN catalog is backwards compatible with target databases from earlier releases.

RMAN compatibility: errors

When compatibility of components is broken RMAN will rise one of the following errors:
RMAN-6186 - associated message: "PL/SQL package %s.%s version %s in %s database is too old"
RMAN-6429 - associated message: "%s database is not compatible with this version of RMAN".
